LBO Wire Reports on Sundance Catalog Acquisition

Portfolio Company News: Sundance Catalog

Brentwood Associates announced today it acquired multi-channel retailer Sundance Catalog, founded by actor Robert Redford in 1989. According to LBO Wire reporter Beina Xu, the business fit right in with the firm’s investment habits. Brentwood just exited Ariat International, a niche equestrian apparel and footwear business, and has owned businesses like jewelry company Chamilia, outdoor apparel company Filson and stationary retailer Paper Source. Although Sundance has a couple of retail stores and an outlet, the lion share of its business is catalog, with an emerging e-commerce arm. It has between $100 million and $150 million in annual sales.

“It’s in a huge market that’s flooded with non-branded apparel, and this company stands out,” said Brentwood Partner Eric Reiter. “There’s a huge opportunity to roll out more stores and tap into the multichannel play. When we looked at this deal we thought ‘gosh, we couldn’t have gotten a better fit.'”
